19-year-old Pontiac woman dies after Southfield Freeway crash
A 19-year-old Pontiac woman died after a crash early Saturday on the Southfield Freeway in Detroit, according to the Michigan State Police Second District.
Police tweeted that a 39-year-old man from Dearborn was driving a Ford van at a high rate of speed southbound on the freeway at about 4:50 a.m. when he lost control. The van rolled over onto its side and slid into a Ford Fusion in the right lane of the freeway near Joy Road, police said.
The 19-year-old woman, a passenger in the van, was partially ejected during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The van driver and two other passengers and the Fusion driver were taken to local hospitals.
"This is yet another example of risky driving behaviors leading to a preventable traffic death," said 1st Lt. Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police Second District in the post. "We are continuing to ask Michiganders to be more careful when they are behind the wheel. Slow down, buckle up, pay attention. Your passengers lives are depending on it."
