York University Women's Basketball loses close one at Mount Marty
YANKTON, S.D. - The York University women's basketball team lost a 56-49 decision at Mount Marty Wednesday evening.
The Panthers are now 1-1 on the season while the home squad improves to 3-0.
Down 7-2 less than two minutes into the contest, Destiny Shepherd converted a lay-up as did Monique Contreras. Pasiko Hvichiani found Ashley Rubio for a jumper. Hvichiani converted a three-point bucket for an 11-7 edge at the 2:22 mark. Down 13-11 in the waning seconds of the period, Clara Romero nailed a jumper to make it 13-13.
Rubio netted the first four points of the second quarter for a 17-13 lead. Britney Schroer hit a shot before Shepherd made two free throws for a 21-15 advantage with 6:18 to play in the half. Rubio's shot gave York a 23-22 lead, but Mount Marty netted the final four points of the quarter.
Hvichiani and Shepherd hit inside shots to start the third frame only to see Mount Marty embark on a 9-0 spurt for a 35-27 margin at the midway point. Shepherd's two free throws cut the deficit to 41-35 at the end of the frame.
Trailing 52-38 with 5:12 to play in the game, Hvichiani started the run with a lay-up. Alliyana Page hit an inside shot before the Panthers hit four free throws to make it 52-46 with 1:23 to play. However, that was as close as York could get the rest of the way.
Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was led by Rubio's 16-point, nine-rebound performance. Shepherd added eight points while Hvichiani tallied seven points and four rebounds. Page chipped in six markers while Schroer added five points and nine boards.
For the game, York hit 17-of-56 (30.4 percent) from the floor while limiting the opposition to 16-of-67 (23.9 percent). The Panthers canned 12-of-16 (75 percent) from the charity stripe. York tallied 19 points off the bench and netted 22 points in the paint.
