SC detention deputy in Charleston charged with assaulting a minor, SLED says

A former Charleston County Juvenile Detention deputy is accused of assaulting and battering a juvenile under her supervision, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Laquinta Sheneil Jefferson, 34, was charged was 3rd degree assault and battery against a 17-year-old, while employed at the Charleston County Juvenile Detention Center, according to a SLED news release.

Jefferson allegedly placed her arm around the victim's neck while trying to get the minor to comply with her orders, according to the news release. The 17-year-old was incarcerated at the Charleston County Juvenile Detention Center at the time of the incident, according to a sworn affidavit.

"The defendant had the present ability to injure the victim and cause harm," the affidavit said.

Jefferson was booked into the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention facility in Charleston County, but has since been released on bond.
