Two of the world’s ten most expensive cities are in California, according to a recent global survey.

Los Angeles came in sixth on the list and San Francisco was 10th, according to The Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2023 Worldwide Cost of Living survey. The only other U.S. city to crack the top ten was New York, which tied for third place.

“Although three U.S. cities made the top ten, North American cities have, on average, slipped down our rankings compared with last year, as the region now reports the lowest inflation in our survey,” according to a summary from the EIU.

Singapore and Zurich tied for the title of most expensive city, while Geneva and New York tied for third-costliest. Los Angeles came in behind Hong Kong, which was fifth, and above Paris, which was seventh. San Francisco ranked behind Copenhagen and Tel Aviv, which tied for eighth.

“Although western European cities were among the most expensive for recreation, transport, household goods and personal care, U.S. cities rank higher for utilities, domestic help and tobacco,” the summary said.

The twice-yearly survey compares more than 400 prices across over 200 products and services in 173 cities. The data is then compiled into an index and ranked.

The newly released results show prices rose an average of 7.4 percent year-over-year at the time the data was collected in August and September, a slight drop compared to the 8.1 percent price growth recorded last year.

Singapore kept its spot as the world’s most expensive city for the ninth time in 11 years. Mexican cities Santiago de Querétaro and Aguascalientes moved up the rankings the most while Russian cities Moscow and St. Petersburg saw the biggest drop. Four Chinese cities also fell significantly in the rankings.
