2 dead in wrong-way crash on Long Island’s Meadowbrook State Parkway
Two people were killed Wednesday night in a wrong-way car crash on the Meadowbrook State Parkway on Long Island.
New York State Police said one vehicle was traveling south in the northbound lanes and struck a car driving in the correct direction, WABC reported.
Cops responded to the scene around 11:30 p.m., according to Patch. Both drivers were declared dead at the scene. Authorities made no mention of any passengers in the two vehicles.
The victims were not publicly identified . Additionally, police did not say what preceded the wrong-way driver traveling south in the northbound lanes.
The crash site was cleared ahead of Thursday morning rush hour, WABC reported. State police are still investigating the accident.
Fatal car crashes have become more frequent throughout the state and in New York City in recent years. Earlier this year, 2024 was on track to be the city's deadliest in a decade with regard to car wrecks .
In June, state comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released a report showing traffic fatalities had grown at "an alarming rate" of 25.8% throughout the state from 2019 to 2022 . Regionally, Long Island was near the median for car crash deaths per capita, with 8.4 fatalities per 100,000 residents during the studied time period.
The Meadowbrook State Parkway runs north-south through Nassau County, running 12 miles from the Northern State Parkway to the Ocean Parkway / Bay Parkway.
