40 displaced after fire breaks out in Rockville women’s shelter

ROCKVILLE, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Officials said 40 residents were displaced after a fire broke out at a women's shelter in Rockville Thursday.

The shelter is located in the 16900 block of Crabbs Branch Way. There, firefighters saw smoke coming from the roof and attic of the shelter.

A fan's motor in a bathroom had caught on fire and traveled into the attic, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service's spokesperson, Pete Piringer, said. It was caused by an overheated fan motor in the ceiling and attic area.

No injuries were reported but 40 residents, including staff, were evacuated and are being temporarily displaced, according to Piringer.

The county's Department of General Services and Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security were helping out by offering shelter and comfort needs, said Piringer.
