GROTON, CT — If you're like many of your Groton neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday , which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Groton area.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

  • Noank Community Support Services: NCSS operates a gender-responsive and trauma-informed therapeutic group home for young women aged 14 to 18 who are referred by the State of CT Department of Children and Families (DCF).
  • Groton Conservation Advocates is an organization dedicated to the protection of Groton's natural resources.
  • Groton Animal Foundation: The foundation has a mission to raise funds to subsidize the general needs of the Town of Groton Animal Control.
  • Beech Brook Equine Rescue has rescued more than 180 horses and donkeys from auction, abusive/neglectful situations, and owners in distress.
  • Groton Community Meals: This group is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that serves free meals on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Groton Senior Center and Thames River Magnet School.
