The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) reported that the first interception was on September 13, at around 6:15 p.m., when a Coast Guard Air Station in Miami spotted an overloaded makeshift boat.

Acting on this information, a Coast Guard Cutter intercepted the vessel. This interception reportedly came after a previous warning from a U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircrew, who had also detected the overloaded boat and instructed it to turn back.
