New York Yankees @ Oakland Athletics: Luis Gil vs. Joey Estes

D.Nguyen2 hr ago
In their last road game of the 2024 regular season, the Yankees eye a win and a sweep of the Oakland Athletics today. Over the past couple contests, the Yankees' pitching and offense have put on quite a show in what will likely be their final series at Oakland Coliseum . Luis Gil looks to replicate Gerrit Cole's and Carlos' Rodon's dominant performances in his matchup against Athletics' starting pitcher Joey Estes.

Gil has performed well in the month of September, with two wins and one no-decision. In 16 innings over his three starts, Gil has struck out an impressive 17 and only allowed 10 hits and two earned runs. His strong starts of late have me reminiscent of the Gil we saw back in May, when he allowed just 14 hits and three runs in six games. Let's hope he continues this strong performance through the postseason.

Should Gil have an underwhelming performance today, Manager Aaron Boone can feel confident in his well-rested bullpen. Since Friday, Boone has only gone to the bullpen three times, and he has relievers like Ian Hamilton and Tommy Kahnle, who haven't been on the mound since Wednesday against the Mariners. With an offday tomorrow, it wouldn't be surprising if both Kahnle and Hamilton make appearances today. Unfortunately, Jake Cousins will not be an option in the bullpen since the Yankees announced this afternoon that he has been placed on the IL with a right pec strain. To take his place, the Yankees recalled right-handed pitcher Clayton Beeter for his first activation since Opening Day weekend.

The Yankees' offense will face Oakland's right-handed starter Estes, who is 7-8 in 23 games this season, with a 4.78 ERA. He's coming off a dismal performance against the Chicago Cubs on September 16th, when he gave up nine hits and six earned runs in just one inning pitched.

Austin Wells is back in the lineup today in the cleanup spot. Jazz Chisholm Jr., who was absent from yesterday's lineup, is back as well, hitting in the sixth hole. Most notably, Jasson Domínguez gets the start over Alex Verdugo for the second straight game. Domínguez had an RBI single in the top of the first in yesterday's contest. Anthony Volpe showed up in the last two games against the Athletics, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and 2-for-4 on Saturday with two RBIs and a solo home run in the second inning.

The Yankees come into today's game with a five-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles . Their magic number to clinch the AL East is at three; it would obviously be ideal to see that fall to one ahead of this week's clash between the two teams at Yankee Stadium. They need to polish off the sweep today and also see the Tigers take down Baltimore. Fingers crossed!
