Terrell Cunningham, 36, died just after 3 a.m. in the 5700 block of South Broadway, police said. He lived in the 10000 block of Coburg Lands Drive in Bellefontaine Neighbors.
Police arrested Shane C. Richmond, 48, after the shooting. The property manager was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action and is in custody without bond.
Richmond told police he was investigating a noise when he saw Cunningham in an apartment building, court documents said. Richmond said he shot the man when Cunningham started to move toward him while making aggressive comments.
But a witness who was also present contradicted Richmond’s account. She said he immediately opened fire after walking into the building and that Cunningham never had the chance to stand up.
