5 New London Nonprofits To Support This Holiday Season

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups.

NEW LONDON, CT — If you're like many of your New London neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday , which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the New London area.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

  1. Sound Community Services: This nonprofit provides support and services for individuals with behavioral health and substance abuse disorders.
  2. Covenant Shelter of New London Inc.: Covenant Shelter of New London, Inc, is a 35-bed emergency shelter for homeless men, women, and children. The shelter provides overnight accommodations, daily meals, case management services, children's programs, parenting classes, and other programs.
  3. Connecticut Storytelling Center: The Connecticut Storytelling Center strives to provide the means for people of all ages to experience stories as a means of expression and communication, as a tool for thinking, reflecting, teaching and learning, and as a catalyst for change.
  4. Alliance For Living: This group is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people affected by HIV/AIDS in New London County.
  5. Alewife Cove Conservancy: The conservancy is dedicated to protecting and improving the health of Alewife Cove which is bordered by Waterford and New London.
