2 people transported to the hospital after fire tears through apartment complex in Lititz [update, video]
Two people were transported to the hospital following an early morning fire at the Newport Commons Apartments in Warwick Township near Lititz.
Emergency crews were alerted to reports of smoke and flames seen from the roof of the complex at approximately 4:30 a.m.
Dozens of emergency crews, led by the Lititz Fire Company, responded to the scene where large sections of the roof had collapsed.
Two people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to dispatchers. All residents of the building were accounted for following the fire.
At 10 a.m., about 10 crews were still on scene at the complex, located on the 300 block of Creekside Lane. Crews left the scene at around 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross said it is assisting 21 adults and a child with emergency lodging, food, supplies, emotional support and more.
Police said the building housed around 40 residents.
Residents reported that several pets are unaccounted for following the fire. A family member of one resident reported that they are searching a nearby wooded area for missing animals.
The State Police Fire Marshal was on the scene Sunday afternoon interviewing residents as part of an ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire.
In 2015, a fire at the Newport Commons Apartments displaced 40 people after a resident improperly discarded ashes from smoking.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
