1 person dead in vehicle fire; H-3 Halawa-bound lanes closed

One person is dead and the Halawa-bound lanes of H-3 freeway remain closed after a vehicle collision and fire today.

Honolulu Fire Department officials said this morning that one occupant was in the vehicle. After the fire was extinguished, Honolulu Emergency Medical Services paramedics pronounce the person dead.

EMS did not immediately release the gender or approximate age of the victim.

HFD said firefighters responded to a 911 call at 10 :14 a.m. reporting a motor vehicle collision on the H3 freeway near the Harano Tunnel. Three HFD units and 10 firefighters responded and found a single vehicle engulfed in flames, official said.

The fire was extinguished at 10 :38 a.m. and the victim was found dead in the vehicle, HFD said.

Honolulu police sent out an alert before 10 :40 a.m. that the freeway was closed "eastbound to Halawa before the Harano Tunnels." Motorists should use alternative routes, they advised.———This breaking news story will be updated when more details are available.
