Two people were rescued Saturday off the coast of Ocean City after the sailboat they were in became disabled in the surf, fire officials said.

Firefighters and police responded to a report of a vessel possibly in distress off the 22nd Street area of Ocean City beach at 2 p.m. Saturday, the Ocean City Firefighter's Association wrote in a Facebook post about the rescue.

Upon arrival, first responders observed a disabled 40-foot sailboat in distress with two people aboard, authorities said.

The boat "was rapidly approaching the sandbar" and getting battered by waves that almost tipped the sailboat over on its side, according to photos of the incident.

A water rescue team was launched and made contact with the people onboard. Once the ship was grounded, firefighters rescued the two occupants, authorities said. One individual was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

No further details about the incident were immediately available.
