SARASOTA, FL — Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota is mourning the "heartbreaking loss" of two North American river otters, Huck and Jane, during Hurricane Milton, according to a news release.

"Despite every effort to ensure their safety, including medical intervention, the unprecedented nature of the back-to-back hurricanes and the resulting stress presented health issues that unfortunately could not be overcome," Mote said.

They were two of three orphaned river otters — Pippi being the third — to move into the aquarium's 360-degree display, "Otters and Their Waves," which opened in 2016, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported .

Huck and Jane died after being evacuated from the aquarium, Mote spokesperson Kevin Cooper told the Herald-Tribune.

"Two in a row is very difficult; it's unprecedented," he said. "We've never experienced anything like it with this whole organization."

The aquarium said in its news release, "The loss of these otters is deeply felt, not only by Mote staff, but by the broader community as well. For years, these otters have been more than just residents at Mote — they were beloved ambassadors of our mission, teaching visitors of all ages about the importance of freshwater coastal ecosystems and conservation. Their playful antics, intelligence, and charm made them instant favorites, bringing joy and inspiration to aquarium guests."

Mote added, "Their loss is a reminder of the severity of the storm's impact, but it also strengthens the Mote family's resolve to protect and care for the animals who continue to thrive under our watch."

The aquarium, as well as Mote's Marine Science Education & Outreach Center on Anna Maria City Pier remain closed to the public.
