  • "Ron Hunt's Views of Rochester at the Millennium" is a calendar with 12 new watercolors. Hunt, a longtime artist, is selling signed calendars at Carson Art and Southeast Minnesota Visual Artists' Gallery on the Peace Plaza.
  • George Lynaugh, 14, of Rochester, took first place in the freestyle competition at the USA Wrestling National Competition in Waterloo, Iowa.

  • Vietnam veterans demanding more education and employment benefits and improvements in Veteran Administration hospitals are demonstrating in Washington, D.C.
  • Rev. James Harris of Des Moines, Iowa, has been elected as the first Black president of the National Education Association, a 1.5-million-member group. (Harris was a radio operator for the Tuskegee Airmen and was named one of "100 Most Influential Black Americans by Ebony Magazine in 1975").

  • July 4th festivities were held throughout Southeast Minnesota despite the intense heat. Over 20,000 people gathered at Lake City on the banks of Lake Pepin to watch the annual Water Carnival. Jean Sass was selected as Queen of the Carnival.
  • The American League All-Star baseball team has been selected. Some players include Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Larry Doby, and Joe DiMaggio. The game will be played in Brooklyn. (The American League won the game 11-7).
  • 1924 – 100 years ago

  • An alleged gambler was arrested by police in Mayo Park. This is the first arrest since the warning issued by Chief of Police Walter Newsome to beware of card sharks and con men operating in the city.
  • At a meeting of the Rochester Park Board, it was decided to open bids on a large new ladies' restroom and a large gentlemen's washroom to be built in Mayo Park.
