A large fire broke out at a landfill near Johnson Creek Thursday night, leaving officials to battle the flames for two hours.

The blaze was reported at Deer Track Park Landfill, at N6756 Waldmann Lane, at 8:47 p.m., Johnson Creek Fire Chief Ben Patterson said in a statement.

Multiple agencies responded to the fire, including fire and emergency services from surrounding areas.

"Access to the fire was initially limited due to the terrain and contents of the landfill; however, crews were able to gain access and begin extinguishing the fire shortly after arrival," Patterson said.

Nearly 1,000 feet of fire hose was needed to fully extinguish the blaze, according to Patterson, who added the incident the incident "lasted approximately two hours in total," with operations wrapping up at about 11 p.m.

No injuries or property damage was reported. Patterson told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the cause of the fire is unknown.

"Fires occur in landfills like this one frequently with unknown causes," Patterson said. "Sometimes [it] is the contents of the landfill or other outside sources but it's too difficult to identify due to the nature of its contents."
