A Paws for Pets: Our mission and our goals
Diversity, nondiscrimination of age, physical disabilities which include attitudes both positive and negative. We accept all cats and their needs. It keeps you answering the phone or going to the door when you hear a knock. Just when you think things are slowing down it never fails to speed up fast enough to derail a train. We at York Adopt a Pet do not discriminate. We take the sick, the old, the dying, the tiny kittens, cats with attitudes, and cats of every color imaginable. They become part of the family. From the day old orphaned kittens to the aged and ailing cats, we take all of them.
Several weeks ago I had a gentleman call me to see if I knew anyone who could watch his brother's cat while his brother needed to be hospitalized. I know that most homes aren't set up for emergency cat calls, especially special needs. Jack is a 20 some senior cat. He is the sweetest "ole boy" He likes to talk and wants to be with me at all times. He is still with me but I am hoping that his "person" will be well enough to take him home soon.
If you read the story about Mama several weeks ago I will give you a short update. I took in 2 cats that I had fostered/babysat for a woman who did not have housing and asked if I could keep cats, Sammie & Mama. until she could reclaim them. We had them spayed and brought up their vaccinations to date. She brought them to me in March of 2018. I kept them until October. A few days turned into 8 months. Then in May of this month they were brought back, same story second chapter.
I put out a plea for your help after I discovered Mama Eyes were so infected, swollen and painful that YAC removed both eyes. I reached out for help in restoring Mama's health. Thank you to each and every one who sent donations for Mama. I know her eyes were so painful and today she is pain free thanks to your generosity. She is such a sweetheart and her daughter Sammie has her same personality. Mama does everything by smell, she knows where the food, water and litter box is, and when I am in her vicinity, she knows exactly where I am and wants to sit purring and making biscuits on my lap.
Little Bert & Ernie were found under a car on May 12. We had a cooling thunderstorm that had quickly passed through York and a lady saw these two little cuties curled up under her car trying to stay warm. I truly didn't think Ernie would make it, his body temperature was low and he was about half the size of Bert. But after being wrapped in a heating pad, some KMR & a dose or 2 of Nutri Call he quickly made a turn for the better. And today they have taken over my family room as they roll and tumble doing the things all healthy little kittens do.
Elaine, the mother who had 6 baby tuxedos has been diagnosed with chronic sinus infections. She is pain free, eats well, no congestion, eyes are clear. But she has mucus that needs to be removed several times a day so she can breathe freely. She was adopted once but the new family could not deal with her sinus issues. She will probably never be adopted, but there is always hope that someone at some time will open their home and heart to this sweetheart. Until that time she will be my sweetheart.
Tuesday I received a call from a gentleman from a town north of Grand Island, he has two HUGE cats, Scruffy & Mr. Grey. He is moving into his son's home temporarily and then they all plan to move to Arkansas. He was hoping he could find a quiet place for his cats to stay until they make the move to Arkansas, a church member said I might be willing to keep them.... how can you say no to a 93 year old man that you won't help him with his cats?
Today is another day, I just got off the phone from a young mother from out of the county. She said her grandmother had strays that have come to her farm for years. Her grandmother had all of them spayed and neutered. Recently a mother cat showed up with 6 babies. Abbie told her grandmother that she would take the mother and babies to her house until they were weaned. This is about the time that she became emotional telling me that somehow the mother had escaped her house and was hit by a car. She knows nothing about fostering orphaned kittens, she said she has tried feeding them but they were drinking. She felt terrible, and her little girl was devastated. She said she has reached out to so many people and shelters but so far no one could help her. She has homes spoken for all 6 of the kittens but she is afraid they won't make it in her care. So a plan was put into place. She is going to wait until her daughter gets out of school and she will be bringing the kittens to me with her daughter so she can see where they will be taken care of, and if possible to tell which is male or female, I suggested that her daughter should name them and I will keep sending videos and pictures, while they are in my care. They would also like to come and visit on weekends so her daughter can see them.
Again, we help the old and the young, both cats and humans. Grandma feels bad, the young mother is heartbroken and the little girl is devastated. The 93 year old man only wants his cats safe until they can be returned to him. And two middle aged cats are in a safe haven and Mama is no longer in pain. Elaine is where she will be monitored daily. I am trying to make a positive outcome for all
I repeat...it's like joining the Mafia, once in you never get out ...
