A Tesla driver was left confused after finding a 'deep' scratch on their car... then they uncovered the shocking reason on the security camera

Shocking footage captured the moment a woman keyed a Tesla as Aussies claim to have noticed an uptick in the number of 'old people' vandalising electric cars.

Coles safety advisor Ibrahim Can had parked his Tesla at a shopping centre in Epping, north Melbourne , last month.

He returned to find a 'deep' scratch stretching from the passenger door to the left of the bumper and immediately checked the car's security video.

Footage shared on Facebook last week showed a woman holding a green bag and dragging a key along the side of the vehicle.

'I reviewed the footage and realised an elderly lady has keyed my car,' Mr Can wrote.

He asked other Tesla owners, who were incensed by the incident, if it was worth taking to his insurance company with some advising him to go to the police.

'Definitely report it to police! An elderly man was just charged after doing this in Queanbeyan NSW ,' one suggested.

Others couldn't believe the recent spate of hatred direct toward electric cars.

'What's with all the hate for Teslas in Australia? These videos get posted weekly. What a shame,' one said.

'What the f*** is wrong with all these old people keying cars for no reason? Like every car needs to have these cameras built in now,' another said.

'This type of behaviour is increasing and far too common here in Australia. Have we lost our capacity to respect others like we used to,' one added.

Many said they'd be more vengeful than the Tesla owner was.

'Absolutely no logical reason. I would print off hundreds of pictures and post them around, offer a reward for her name,' one said.

'Report it, put the horrible unit where she belongs,' another said.

Some even attributed the disrespect to age.

'It's always boomers? You already won every lottery in life, there's more to harm?' one asked.

'I agree. It's disgusting. Never ever young people. Always boomers,' another concurred.

'Perhaps Tesla is a symbol of a new generation of vehicles. They are jealous that the younger generations can do better,' one man hypothesised.

However, not everyone agreed.

'She doesn't look like she has won any lotteries and its simple envy on her part, which has nothing to do with age demographic,' one argued.

'There are just as many acts of stupidity and aggression towards Tesla drivers from young boofheads in twin-cab utes.'

'Can you please not stigmatise all dual-cab ute drivers please?' another man replied.

In the year ending June 2024, there were 45 recorded counts of criminal damage to private cars in Victoria, up from 26, and 36 in the two years prior.

Daily Mail Australia contacted Victoria Police for comment.
