A'ja Wilson vs. Seattle Storm: A Glance Into LV Aces Icon's Key Numbers Heading Into WNBA Playoffs

V.Davis24 min ago
"I still feel like I have more," A'ja Wilson commented despite a stellar performance this season. The Las Vegas Aces, riding on Wilson's exceptional gameplay, have advanced to the playoffs and would be looking to materialize their three-peat dream, but if the 2x WNBA champion is to be believed, then there is more to her. The 28-year-old started this season hungrier than ever for the MVP title, putting a huge divide between herself and the rest of the league's stars.

Coming off an MVP snub, Wilson was left furious at the voters. So this time when she took the hardwood, she had one thing in mind: perform so exceptionally well that the voters don't have another choice, and looks like she has succeeded in it. The South Carolina-born has done her magic on the court and before the Aces clash with the Seattle Storm starting Sunday in the post-season, here is a stark reminder of how the MVP contender has performed up until now.

A'ja Wilson's offensive rampage Filling in for Gray, Wilson made her intentions clear from the season opener against the Phoenix Mercury. Then, she hit 30 points with 13 rebounds. The 2x WNBA MVP showed that she was ready to dominate the league in the two stats that are her strengths: points and rebounds. Each of the first five games had a double-double from the 2x WNBA Champion, which set the tone for what was to come later.

Capitalizing on her talent, Wilson kept on scoring high numbers, which helped her surpass the Seattle Storm guard Jewell Loyd's most career points in a single season (939) during a matchup against the Indiana Fever in September. Not only that, the Aces icon became the first WNBA star to hit the 1000 points mark in a single season. This was when she scored 29 points against Connecticut Sun on Sunday. As of now, Wilson has 1021 points, which is a feat in itself .

Now that she scored the highest points in a singular WNBA season, Wilson also overtook Diana Taurasi for the most points per game. She has hit 26.9 points per game, which is better than Taurasi's 25.3 points per game. Therefore, Wilson not only led the tally in points average but also made a W record with it. If that wasn't enough, she displayed her class even in the rebounds and blocks tally.

A'ja Wilson: A defensive wall Wilson hit her career's highest double-doubles in a single season (23), falling short of Alyssa Thomas's record of most double-doubles in a single season (28) by only 5 double-doubles. Thus, as her points tally grew, so did her rebounds stat. Currently, Wilson leads the WNBA charts in most rebounds in a single season with 451 boards. Initially, she was falling behind the Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese's rebounds tally which she eclipsed during her last regular season game this year against the Seattle Storm on Tuesday. Wilson this year transcended boundaries as she proved that her defensive skills were as valuable as her offensive ability.

Banking on her capability to defend the rim, the 2× WNBA Defensive Player of the Year hit a season-high of 6 blocks against the Los Angeles Sparks in July. Overall, Wilson took her blocks tally to 98 this season which ranks at the eighth spot in the season's highest led by Brittney Griner's 129. Though Wilson did not break any W record in this, she certainly has the highest blocks by any player in this particular season. Thus she is the only W player to have the highest points, rebounds, and blocks in a single season.

Apart from that, Wilson at present leads this season in points per game and blocks per game whereas she is second only next to Reese in rebounds per game. She has hit 26.9 points per game with 11.9 rebounds per game and 2.6 blocks per game. And starting from post-season Wilson might make other records. While the NBA star Bam Adebayo might have tweeted "U'nanimous" for Wilson, the 2018 first-overall pick only wants to better her numbers.

Hopefully, this time Wilson will be able to fulfill her dream of taking her team to a three-peat while bagging her third MVP award. And if Adebayo's prediction comes true and Wilson gets all the 60 votes for the first place, then she will create history as the only other star, after Cynthia Cooper, to be a unanimous choice for the MVP award.
