Alexandria Health Department issues third rabies alert in less than 1 month

ALEXANDRIA, Va. ( DC News Now ) — The Alexandria Health Department is issuing a third rabies alert in less than a month after another rabid raccoon was found.

The raccoon was near Chambliss Park and has since tested positive for rabies, according to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA).

On Nov. 15, the raccoon came into contact with some dogs in the backyard of a home near the park.

AWLA said the dogs are in quarantine and the raccon is dead.

Anyone who has come in contact with the raccoon should call the health department at (703) 746-4910.

Two other raccoons tested positive for rabies in late October.

One of the rabid raccoons was found along a trail at Dora Kelley Nature Park on Oct. 27 and the other was found in the Taylor Run neighborhood on Oct. 29.
