Invasive species aids the spread of wildfires: What is it?

NEW YORK (PIX11) — New York City officials declared a drought warning on Monday, urging New Yorkers to save water as state reservoir levels are significantly lower than typical.

Dry and windy conditions have increased the risk of wildfires, with the FDNY extinguishing over 300 brush fires in recent weeks, according to officials.

Officials cited a lack of rain and recent weather patterns as reasons for the fires, but they also pointed out that an invasive species has contributed to the prolonging and spreading of the flames.

Artemisia vulgaris, known as common mugwort, is a species native to Europe and Eastern Asia. The plant has been used for medicinal purposes , including digestive problems, irregular menstruation, and high blood pressure, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

Common mugwort is classified as a prohibited and regulated invasive plant by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, making it illegal to sell, import, purchase, or transport.

PIX11 News reached out to the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to learn about the efforts to remove mugwort and received the following response from a spokesperson:

"Our natural areas crews work together with contractors and volunteers through our Stewardship program to remove overabundant and spreading species, such as Phragmites and Mugwort, that can cause brush fires to spread faster and burn longer. We also plant dozens of hearty tree and shrub species to increase species diversity and overall forest health."

Common mugwort spreads through underground stems , creating rapidly expanding patches. New Yorkers can help prevent new colonies by uprooting very young plants in spring or early summer before the underground stems have developed.

Chemicals and herbicides can be used; however, it is important to follow the label directions carefully.
