A Bergen County police officer was seriously injured Saturday night after an alleged drunken driver crashed into his patrol car at the scene of a highway traffic stop, authorities said.

Allendale Police Officer Mark Dunn Jr. was assisting another officer on the shoulder of Route 17 when an SUV veered into Dunn's stopped patrol car, causing a four-vehicle chain reaction that left him with serious injuries, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

The SUV's driver is accused of driving while intoxicated and speeding in the wreck. Authorities alleged Joseph Ford, 18, of New York City ran from the scene before he was captured by responding officers.
