Alleged home invasion shooter still on the loose: police

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ( KGET ) — Bakersfield police are still searching for a suspect related to a home invasion in southwest Bakersfield in which the victim was shot with her own gun.

The Bakersfield Police Department says it happened around 5:30 Tuesday morning on Yellowstone River Drive. The victim says she was alone with her baby when an intruder entered the home and attacked her. She says she reached for her gun but a struggle ensued, ending with her getting shot in the leg while the suspect ran off.

Police arrested a registered sex offender in the area who fit the victim's description, but Wednesday evening, BPD cleared the man and released him from custody. A BPD spokesperson says investigators used a combination of cellular phone location data and surveillance footage to confirm the man was not at the scene during the offense.

Police are looking for a man in his 30s or 40s, between 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt, dark pants and dark shoes.
