Allred ahead of Cruz in newest poll of US Senate race; debate scheduled

Support for incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz could be narrowing according to a new poll out Friday that shows – for the first time – his Democratic challenger ahead of him. This comes as Cruz and challenger Colin Allred next month.

Allred has been criticized by some for running , but according to poll numbers, that style of campaigning appears to be working for him.

The numbers from the Morning Consult show Allred one point ahead of Cruz – 45 percent of 44 percent – among likely voters. That is still within the margin of error, but it is also the first poll to show Allred ahead. Cruz has been leading in the polls, albeit by single digits. This would be Cruz's third term if he is re-elected, but he has been a controversial and divisive figure in his time in the Senate and that might work against him.

"There's going to be a lot of people who are going to vote simply to get rid of Ted Cruz. And because of that, you're going to expect a close race every single time. With Allred, his quiet campaign might be very good because he's not burning a lot of political capital or money or making big mistakes," said Professor Brian Smith, who teaches political science at St. Edwards University in Austin.

The Senate race debate is scheduled for next month, October 15th at 7 pm at TV station WFAA in Dallas and we will, of course, bring you the highlights of the debate, which happens just three weeks before Election Day.
