Alvernia University has received a $3 million state grant to support renovation projects at its Reading and Pottsville CollegeTowne campuses.

The money is being provided through the Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program and was one of several grants announced earlier this month by Gov. Josh Shapiro's office.

In Reading, the grant will aid in the conversion of the former American House at Fourth and Penn streets into a state-of-the-art community-based health center in partnership with Berks Community Health Center. The university will also add additional business incubator space for the O'Pake Institute for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship and retail space.

In Pottsville, the funding will aid in the second phase of the conversion of a former Giant Grocery store in the 500 Progress Avenue into a CollegeTowne campus. That campus opened to students in January 2023.

"The CollegeTowne initiatives continue to bring our communities together and inspire belief in the redevelopment of Reading and Pottsville," Alvernia President Dr. Glynis A. Fitzgerald said. "This funding will continue to reshape the future of both cities."
