Annual POW 5K raises funds for Hubbell VFW

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - People ran on Michigan Technological University's campus in Houghton to support their local veterans on Saturday morning.

The annual POW/MIA Memorial 5K run walk saw a great turnout outside the ROTC building. The event remembers prisoners of war and soldiers still lost today and their sacrifices. Cadet Jonathan Willis says the run raised between $2,000 and $3,000 last year.

All proceeds will be donated to the Hubbell VFW. Willis says it's a place to talk with veterans and learn more about the VFW.

"Is a great way to build that support system, build that awareness, as well as, of course, financially support them," Willis said. "So, they can continue to contribute to their own mission and grow their outreach and support more in the local area."

Racers could celebrate crossing the finish line with a raffle. Local businesses donated items like gift certificates and clothes. Willis says he's excited to keep the tradition going another year.
