Auburn NFL roundup: Anders Carlson connects on 58-yard field goal for New York Jets

N.Hernandez33 min ago
Anders Carlson came up from the practice squad on Sunday to serve as the New York Jets' fourth kicker in the past four games. Carlson might make it to the next one.

Carlson made field goals of 58 and 35 yards and connected on all three of his extra-point tries in the Jets' 28-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

The Green Bay Packers' kicker as a rookie last season, Carlson had kicked in two games for the San Francisco 49ers this season as an injury replacement and made all five of his field-goal attempts, including a career-long 55-yard field goal.

On Sunday, Carlson eclipsed that with the 58-yarder as the Jets took a 17-16 lead with 2:55 left in the third quarter. The 58-yarder is the second-longest field goal in franchise history, behind only a 60-yarder by Greg Zuerlein in a 27-22 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 4, 2022.

The field goal was the second-longest in the NFL by an Auburn alumnus. On Dec. 3, 2006, Rob Bironas kicked a 60-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining in the Tennessee Titans' 20-17 victory over the Colts.

Carlson's 35-yard field goal put New York ahead 27-22 with 2:41 to play.

Carlson was among the 13 former Auburn players who got on the field on the 11th Sunday of the NFL's 105th season.

  • Jamien Sherwood started at linebacker for the Jets. Sherwood made six tackles and registered one quarterback hit.
  • Colts cornerback Jaylin Simpson is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.
  • Braden Smith started at right offensive tackle for the Colts.
