RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) –An award winning quilt maker recently opened up shop in Rapid City.

Bonnie LeBeaux has been making quilts for close to 30 years. She got her start by helping her grandmother.

"We like to within our culture, we like to honor the achievements of our people, of our children when they do significant acts of achievement or valor. Graduation is always the biggest time of the year," owner of Bonnie LeBeaux Quilts said.

LeBeaux recently opened up a shop on North Lacrosse Street where she sells quilts along with the materials to make them.

"Always great to have more fabric choices in Rapid City. We have a very active group of women and men who are quilters in Rapid City and we just love it." quilter Deb Winter said.

LeBeaux says each quilt can take anywhere from six to ten hours to complete.

"You just don't see them like you used to. So it's awesome that someone out here is coming alive for the future generations. Because so much stuff right now seems to be going on the wayside," Winter said.

"And passing that down to your children, it's not just about the end result, it's about what happens while you're creating, who you're creating for. It shows patience and creativity and there's a lot more than just the quilts," LeBeaux said.

It's a tradition LeBeaux hopes her new storefront helps pass down from one generation to the next.

Bonnie LeBeaux Quilts will have an official grand opening during this year's Black Hills Pow Wow later this Fall.

She takes orders in her store as well as online .
