BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV) – "Organize..stand up and speak out with a unified voice to protect our freedom to read:" That's just part of the message of a new documentary called Banned Together.

It was filmed in part here in Beaufort County and details local students' battle in and out of schools to fight book banning. A total of 97 books were pulled from Beaufort County School shelves. In the end, only five were taken out of the library.

Joining WSAV's Andrew Davis is Millie Bennett, one of the students profiled and 'stars' of the film, and Tom Wiggin, the director-producer of the documentary.

Together, they discuss the ongoing debates and impact of the book bans, as well as connections that were made and lessons learned during the making of the film.

Banned Together will be screened at 3 p.m. on Sept. 22 at St. John's Lutheran Church on 157 Lady's Island Drive in Beaufort.
