Barre and Shelburne to vote on wastewater facility upgrades

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Voters in Shelburne and Barre are weighing the cost of wastewater upgrades.

In Shelburne, a $38 million bond would upgrade the town's aging facilities and expand sewer capacity for future development.

Only sewer customers would foot the bill - and the bond is expected to add about 3% to sewer bills.

In Barre City, residents are also considering upgrades to their water infrastructure. Officals say the facility is long overdue for renovations.

The $7.6 million dollar bond on Tuesday's ballot would fix a part of the facility that removes solid materials from wastewater such as rags and grit.

The city says they spend about 200,000 extra dollars a year on repairs and need a more permanent fix.

The bond would increase sewer bills by over $4 for the average system user.
