Barton Parks Obituary (1938

I loved reading this summary of Barton ́s many interests and accomplishments. My brilliant first cousin had special connections to our whole family, and made a special effort to maintain those relationships his entire life. When my mom was in her early 90 ́s, she had ceased to have any type of extended conversations with us, or anyone, really. Barton came to see her and got her started on memories of her youth, and she talked to him for about an hour. We were all interested and amazed at what she remembered and shared. He knew how to engage anyone in thinking about everything, the sign of a true teacher. I loved him, his brilliant brother Clarence and his beautiful sister Barbara-all distinguished in their own ways. My sincere condolences and love to Evelyn, Lisa and Amanda. He will certainly be missed by all who knew him.

My husband Jim Gutsell, who died July 26, and I were very fond of both Barton and Evelyn Parks. I send my condolences to Evelyn and the family. As his lovely obituary makes clear, Barton had a profoundly beneficial impact on Guilford College and the larger Greensboro community. We need more Barton Parks in our world today. In sympathy, Jane Gutsell

I was a student of Barton ́s at Middlebury College in 1968-69, and lived with him, his growing family and other ex-students in Putney, Vermont in 1970-71. His understanding of the social order and its injustices helped frame my world view. It is clear that he was more than an academic even when we first met - willing to try living by his ideals. His subsequent life has shown that he continued to work with those less privileged and fortunate while inspiring many others. Even though we communicated only sporadically over the years, I will still miss him. My condolences to Evelyn, Lisa and Amanda. Barton was a very special soul.

Barton holds a special place in my heart as a colleague at Guilford, a f/Friend at New Garden Meeting, and after his retirement, as a resident at FH where I served as chaplain. We had worked to develop a program for community dialogue which we were unable to complete. Barton's is a warm and creative soul. Much love to you, Evelyn, Lisa, and Amanda.
