Be more sustainable this spooky season

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Let the countdown begin because soon enough, kids will be out trick-or-treating, but they'll need their costumes first.

If parents are still on the search for their child's costume, there are ways to do it while helping keep Minnesota green.

Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota is busy this fall season as many people are out searching for affordable costumes.

Many people will only get one use out of their costume and Goodwill wants to keep costumes out of landfills by giving it a second use.

Nolan Schuette, Goodwill Rochester South's general manager, said repurposing costumes helps keep thousands of pounds of costumes out of landfills because most of the material it's made out of is not recyclable or biodegradable.

Through Goodwill's conducted research, it found an average fall outfit uses 10,000 gallons of water to produce it, so thrifting second-hand can help reduce negative impacts on the environment.
