The Lake County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene of the collision at the intersection of West Rockland Road and the Des Plaines River pedestrian/bike trail at about noon, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

Authorities say the bicyclist appears to have been heading north on the Des Plaines River Trail when he was hit by a westbound Toyota Prius, which was driven by a 39-year-old Gurnee man. The man was taken to a nearby hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries.
