BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Binghamton man was sentenced to jail on Wednesday for his involvement in a shooting earlier this year.

Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti announced that Lamont Weaver, 20, appeared in Broome County Court and was sentenced to 61⁄2 years is New York State Prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.

Weaver fired multiple rounds during a shooting outside of 100 Susquehanna Street in Binghamton on April 27.

According to Battisti, during sentencing the Honorable Carol Cocchiola offered justification for her sentence, telling Weaver that the "community deserves to be protected from you... and when you are released, they'll continue to need to be protected from you."

"Weaver's criminal actions were nothing less than heinous. His behavior showed a total disregard for the safety and well-being of our community. It is my hope that during his time in incarceration Weaver will take the opportunity to reflect on his actions and make meaningful efforts toward rehabilitation," said Battisti.

Over 1,000 people have been criminally prosecuted in Russia for speaking out against the war, according to rights project OVD-Info, and over 20,000 have been detained for protesting.
