Birmingham student seriously injured in shooting outside Woodlawn High School basketball game

A teen was seriously injured in a shooting outside of Woodlawn High School Tuesday night.

Gunfire erupted just before 10 p.m. following a basketball game at the school.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade a group of people got into an altercation behind the school.

The victim and his friends got into their vehicles and attempted to drive away.

The suspect fired shots, striking the teen in the passenger's seat. The teen's friends drove around to the front of the school and reported he had been shot.

Wade said the victim's injuries are life-threatening.

He is a student, but not at Woodlawn.

No one is in custody.

Birmingham City Schools spokesperson Sherrel Wheeler Stewart said the shooting took place in the school's parking lot and that one person was taken to the hospital.
