Black Friday shoppers flock to Sunland Plaza despite road work in west El Paso

J.Wright3 months ago

Some Black Friday shoppers were impacted by the road work on Sunland Park and Mesa Hills as they stepped out to begin their holiday shopping.

While crews were not on the site, the road work included orange barrels along Mesa Hills leading up to Sunland Park.

Shoppers at Sunland Plaza said they noticed the barrels as they made their way to the shopping center, and some believed it added to the traffic in the area.

That was the case for Briana Jeske who was out celebrating her baby's first Black Friday.

“I think traffic is really bad here in general right now just because of the construction,” said Jeske.

Another shopper added he went to the stores earlier to avoid the rush both in the stores and on the roads.

“We actually decided to go in the morning because as I know whenever it's Black Friday if you go in the busy hours after 12, you're going to have to spend more than what you expect to be in the stores,” Itzam Barela said.

As hundreds of shoppers made their way into their favorite stores, a pair of sisters shared the way they navigate Black Friday shopping.

“We start early, we were out at 8 o'clock this morning and it's all been very civilized,” Joyce Taylor said.

Taylor's sister added Black Friday shopping has become a tradition for them.

“We have a list, we go by the list, the stores, what we're looking for, so we're pretty organized,” Sharon Hicks said.
