Boat crash near island kills one person, South Carolina officials say

One person was killed Saturday in a boat crash, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources .

The incident on the Intracoastal Waterway , near Sandy Island, was called an accident by S.C. DNR officials. That's in Georgetown County, about 35 miles from Myrtle Beach.

At about 10 a.m. Saturday, DNR reported an incident involving a single bass boat with one person on board. The boater later died , DNR reported.

Information about the cause of the accident and the depth of the water where it occurred was not available.

The Georgetown County Coroner's Office has neither publicly identified the boater nor released a cause of death, but said the victim was a 47-year-old Myrtle Beach resident , Georgetown and Beyond News reported.

DNR said the man suffered injuries in the crash, and an autopsy has been scheduled, according to the coroner.

The death continues to be investigated by DNR officers.

The Intracoastal Waterway is a 212-mile-long, 12-foot deep, 90-foot-wide channel extending from the North Carolina–South Carolina state line to Port Royal Sound near Hilton Head in Beaufort County, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
