J.Martin3 months ago

JACKSONVILLE – The Marion Wildcats followed up Friday night’s exciting 67-66 overtime win over Jacksonville with a split in Saturday’s games.

Marion earned a second-place finish out of the four-team round-robin meet by virtue of its 69-38 win over Chicago Brooks Saturday evening coupled with Friday's win.

An extremely physical game Saturday night with Brooks, Marion led at each quarter break: 22-19. 33-29, and 63-34.

Senior forward Phoenix Hatchett was the offensive star of the game for the Wildcats with 21 points, 11 coming in the first half and 10 in the second. Junior Kyan Cole followed with 13 and Ethan Simmons was also in double figures with 11.

Kaden Rogowski also contributed eight points for the Wildcats. Junious Thomas came off the bench to score seven points.

In the early game Saturday, Marion was throttled by a superb O’Fallon team, 60-37.

The Panthers burst out to an 8-0 lead and never relinquished the lead en route to victory. They led the Wildcats at each quarter break: 14-9, 36-19, and 56-26.

No Marion player reached double digits in this one. Ethan Simmons drained three triples from beyond the arc for nine points, all in the first half, and Blake Blue came off the bench in the fourth quarter to match that total with nine points on one 3-pointer and three conventional two-point field goals.

Phoenix Hatchett, who poured in 16 points Friday against Jacksonville, was held to six points by the Panthers. Kaden Rogowski, who led the Wildcats in scoring Friday with 24 points, could only manage two field goals for five points.

Junious Thomas, Reece Anthony, Kyan Cole and MJ Smith all tallied two points each for Marion. Jaeden Rush paced O’Fallon (2-0) with 18 points.

Now 2-1 overall, the Wildcats return home next weekend. They host Breese Mater Dei on Friday and Effingham Saturday.
