GIRLS BASKETBALL | Carterville claims championship trophy at Herrin
HERRIN – The Carterville Lions outperformed the field this week at the Herrin Thanksgiving Round-Robin tournament
The Lions, led by veteran head coach Todd Rogers, went 5-0 with wins on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
On Saturday, the Lions breezed to a 49-32 victory over Johnston City. In the other two games, Herrin rolled past Benton, 67-57, and Carbondale defeated Cairo, 45-33.
Doyle tallied 27 of the team’s 49 points in the Lions’ win over the Indians. Khamari Jackson followed with 11 and Caidence Phillips hit for 10 points.
JC was led by Carsyn Clark’s 15 points.
“I expected that we could be competitive with everyone this week,” Rogers said. “And as it turns out, we were. We had a very good week.”
Rogers said tournament MVP Amayah Doyle was an unstoppable force in the paint for his team.
“She’s the player that everyone tries to stop,” he said. “But it’s not that easy to stop her. She gets good position inside and scores or draws fouls and then she proceeds to make her free throws.”
Rogers added that he was especially pleased with his squad’s defense this week.
“We had some kids step up and make some big plays for us.”
While the Lions finished a perfect 5-0, the host Herrin Tigers were a solid 4-1. Benton finished third at 3-2. Johnston City was fourth at 2-3. Carbondale went 1-4 and Cairo was 0-5.
Selected All-Tournament were: Doyle-MVP, Caidence Phillips, and Khamari Jackson (all of Carterville); Karli Mann and Janiya Harrison (Herrin); Blakely Johnson and Malia Webb (Benton); Carsyn Clark (Johnston City); Madysyn Butler (Carbondale); and Shanti Taylor (Cairo).
