BOYS HOOPS: Opening week schedule for Downriver and Dearborn area teams

The much-anticipated 2023-24 boys’ basketball season has arrived.

After formally getting their seasons underway with tryouts and practices on November 13, teams around the state can officially begin playing contests on Monday.

Last year was a historic one for the Downriver area as three teams — Romulus Summit Academy, Ecorse, and Taylor Trillium Academy — reached the quarterfinals of the state playoffs for the first time in over a decade (2012). Of those three, Ecorse ultimately made a return trip to the Division 3 state semifinals.

Elsewhere locally, Brownstown Woodhaven continued its run of dominance as they won the Downriver League title for a third straight season and fifth time in the last six seasons. The Warriors made history in their league title run last year, becoming the first school in DRL history to go undefeated in conference play.

Flat Rock and Riverview shared the regular-season crown in the Huron League while Riverview Gabriel Richard took home first-place honors in the Catholic League’s AA Division.

Meanwhile on the Dearborn area side, both Dearborn High and Dearborn Heights Robichaud collected district championships. Both teams ultimately saw their playoff runs end to teams who eventually made it to the Breslin Center. Dearborn, in particular, fell to the eventual D1 state champions from Detroit Cass Tech in the regional final round.

A lot of these aforementioned schools are expected to be among the better programs in the local areas again this upcoming winter season. And all of the action gets underway on Monday.
