Bradford driver who forged papers to escape prosecution jailed

A driver who forged documents in an effort to escape prosecution for careless driving has been jailed.

Mikael Khan, 37, falsely claimed to have sold his car after dashcam footage showed the vehicle being driven carelessly in Leeds last year, West Yorkshire Police said.

Khan, of Brookfield Avenue in Shipley, was jailed for 16 months at Bradford Crown Court.

Officers said they hoped the sentence served as a "warning" for anyone trying to avoid detection for a criminal offence.

Khan had been handed a notice of intended prosecution by police after they were sent the incriminating footage, the force said.

Checks had shown he was insured to drive the BMW, but he denied the vehicle was still in his possession.

Rachel Wainwright, from West Yorkshire Police's casualty prevention unit, said the conviction "demonstrates that we will prosecute those who drive carelessly on our roads".

She added: "Khan went to great lengths to try and avoid a fixed penalty for this incident, but it has only resulted in him receiving a prison sentence."
