Broadway Street Fair returns for 7th year with expanded offerings
The seventh annual Broadway Street Fair is set to transform Newport's main thoroughfare into a vibrant celebration of local culture on Saturday, October 12. More than 200 artisans, makers, and food vendors will line Broadway, welcoming visitors from 11:30 am to 8 pm.
This free, family-friendly event stretches from Equality Park to Washington Square, featuring a diverse array of activities and performances. The fair begins at the Rainbow Crosswalk in Equality Park, with fine artists, crafters, and specialty food purveyors extending into the historic Washington Square.
"Each year at BSF, nearly 20,000 people take a fall stroll along Broadway, Newport's historic Main Street and major artery into the city and celebrate the diversity that Newport is known for," organizers of the event write in a press release.
The event is divided into two sections, with the area from Equality Park to Marlborough Street open until 4 pm, and the stretch from Marlborough Street to Washington Square continuing until 8 pm.
Visitors can explore their creative side through various artistic activities. Chalk art, plein air painting, and sketching opportunities will be available throughout the fair. For younger attendees, Mermaid Masterpieces will host kids' paint parties.
Food enthusiasts can sample offerings from numerous food trucks and local vendors. The Newport Vineyards Beyond Broadway Beer Garden, located at Provence Sur Mer, will serve cold beer and wine for those looking to quench their thirst.
Entertainment is a key component of the Street Fair. Local bands and entertainers will begin performances at noon. The Providence Drum Troupe will march near the historic Old Colony House, adding a lively rhythm to the festivities.
For music lovers, the Old Colony House stage will feature headline performances by Blues Legend James Montgomery and Ryan Lee Crosby. Steve Smith and The Nakeds will provide twilight sets as the day winds down.
Additional attractions include a car show and pasta-making demonstrations. These diverse offerings aim to showcase the local Broadway District, which the press release describes as "six blocks of awesomeness, packed with great bars, indie restaurants, community service organizations, coffee shops, live music, and more."
Organizers strongly encourage attendees to walk, bike, or use public transportation to reach the event. Broadway will be closed to vehicular traffic, with no parking available on the street. Handicap-accessible parking will be provided close to the route.
The Broadway Street Fair is made possible through the support of presenting sponsor Peoples Credit Union and various local businesses and organizations. These include the City of Newport, Virgin & Aged, Little Rhody Pasta, the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce, and Discover Newport, among others.
Community involvement is a crucial aspect of the event's success. A planning meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 2, and a volunteer orientation will take place on Wednesday, October 9. Both meetings will be held at 6 p.m. in the Newport Police Station community room.
