Wood County pumpkin patch invites families to engage with fall traditions

E.Wilson3 hr ago
WOOD COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - As East Texas moves into the fall season, a familiar gourd will soon be decorating many porches and front yards: pumpkins!

They are synonymous with fall and Halloween, but the origin of their connection is something you may not know.

The demand for fall pumpkins is just as much for decoration as it is for their tasty insides. Folklore reveals the Irish were the first to start carving out the insides of turnips and setting candles inside to ward off evil spirits. When they immigrated to America, they began to carve pumpkins to ward off a particular spirit they called "Stingy Jack," hence the name "Jack-o-lantern."

Wood County pumpkin grower Jerry Graves says whether they're eaten or displayed, growing pumpkins is a way he's found to help families create fun memories.
