Burlington Police Department Welcomes New Search, Rescue Dog Meet Zuko, an 8-week-old puppy that officially joined the department this week.

BURLINGTON, MA — The Burlington Police Department has welcomed a new working dog named Zuko.

Zuko, an 8-week-old purebred chocolate Labrador, officially joined the department Tuesday.

"We are thrilled to have Zuko as part of our department," Chief Thomas Browne said in a statement. "He has already brought so much excitment to the community in his short time here and we are looking forward to watching him grow into his role as a search and rescue dog with Officer Miedico. Having Zuko will be a valuable resource for Burlington. Once he completes training, he will provide much-needed assistance in rescue situations, comfort and emotional support for community members, and more."

Officer Aurise Miedico will be Zuko's handler, taking him to training, around the community, and housing him.

The name Zuko was chosen by Burlington Middle and Elementary School students. Officer Miedico collaborated with School Resource Officer Dom Calicchio to have students choose between three potential names; Zuko was the winner.

Zuko will function as the department's search and rescue dog and comfort dog after he completes his training. He will begin basic obedience training in the next few weeks and then move to search and rescue training, according to a statement.

He will not serve in any dangerous capacity, but he will be visiting community members such as students and the Council on Aging, and attending town events.

Zuko comes from Boonefield Labradors in Rindge, New Hampshire.
