Butler County hopes incentives bring in election volunteers

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Butler County is looking to add election workers by offering incentives.

Board of Elections Director Nicole Unzicker said they're paying election workers around $200 as early voting begins on Oct. 8.

"It's a lot of training," Unzicker said. "Three hours of training that they come in and long hours on election day. It's a lot of information that they're learning in a quick period of time."

Unzicker said they have enough workers to run the election, but they need backups and some people based on their political party.

"In places like Oxford, we tend to need a little more Republican-affiliated," Unzicker said. "Wayne, Madison Township and Middletown we are right now looking for Democratic-affiliated workers to fill in spots there."

Unzicker said in 2020 they had problems with volunteers dropping out at the last minute. They're working now to have a backup list in case to avoid similar problems.

"We don't tend to have too much trouble recruiting during a presidential (year), but we still make the same effort we would any other year," Unzicker said.

She said voters need to also prepare for the election. This is the first year Ohio will require approved IDs.

"People that are looking for information about the election, make sure that URL has a dot gov," Unzicker said. "That's where you're going to get the most accurate information. Either our website or the Secretary of State's."
