Cam Newton criticizes Auburn football, coaching staff in reaction to Cal loss

Cam Newton knows a thing or two about success at Auburn.

He's one of three Auburn players to win the Heisman Trophy and helped bring the Tigers a national championship in 2010.

Now, in his post-football career, he's active on social media across multiple platforms. On his YouTube channel titled "4th&1 With Cam Newton" he does podcasts where he talks about various football topics.

In an episode uploaded Sept. 12, part of the episode featured Newton's reaction to himself watching Auburn's Sept. 7 loss to Cal . The clip was posted by itself on Sept. 17 and shows Newton watching back his passionate and frustrated live reactions to Auburn's 21-14 loss.

The clip was shown in a response to comment that read, "Can you fix Payton Thorne? Or better yet, find Auburn a better QB."

In the clip, Newton talked about more than just the quarterback play, starting off by criticizing Auburn's defense on a Cal third down.

"Bro it was third-and-two and the f*****g DBs were playing off and they completed a f*****g hitch," Newton said in the clip, staring at his co-host confused.

"This is what I don't understand, how do you get beat by a team that did not throw the ball more than 10 yards," Newton said later in the clip.

When asked specifically about the quarterback play, Newton's answer was more detailed.

"It's either the coach's fault, or the player's, Payton Thorne," Newton said. "But at the end of the day, I've been hearing the same excuse for too many years. 'Oh we've gotta get our recruits in.' M**********r you had a whole f*****g recruiting cycle that you should've recruited another m***********g quarterback."

Newton was critical of the quarterback's mechanics in the pocket but put the blame just as much on the coaching staff.

"It's the coach's fault just as much as it is the player's. More of the coach's fault because that's the person you're putting your job on the line for," Newton said.

Thorne was benched after the Cal game, making way for redshirt freshman quarterback Hank Brown. In his first career start, Brown threw for 235 yards and four touchdowns in Auburn's Week 3 win over New Mexico.

Hugh Freeze confirmed that Brown will remain the starter in Auburn's Southeastern Conference opener against Arkansas on Saturday.
