Carrie Hoerger Sebenius, a devoted educator, mother, advocate for students, and spiritual counselor passed away on August 29, 2024. Raised in Pasadena, California, Carrie was known for her sharp intellect, unwavering faith, and deep commitment to helping those around her.Carrie attended Pasadena High School, Pasadena City College, and later UCLA, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Education. Her passion for teaching led her to earn a master's degree in education and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education Psychology from Claremont College.Carrie taught at the college level at various institutions, including Azusa Pacific University, Loyola Marymount University, and California Lutheran University. She also served as a school psychologist with the Azusa Unified School District, advocating for students with special needs. Carrie was particularly proud of her work helping educators create student-first learning environments, ensuring that even the most vulnerable had the support they needed to thrive. She continued to support local schools as a volunteer psychologist following her retirement. Carrie was a devoted Catholic, serving on the board of Catholic Charities and remaining active in several parishes across Pasadena and Los Angeles. Carrie was also a member of the Ignatian Volunteer Corps, where she found strength and purpose through her ongoing spiritual development with the Jesuit community.Carrie was married in June 1959 to Wayland Gustaf "Gus" Sebenius, also a graduate of UCLA. Together, they raised five children in San Marino. She is predeceased by her parents Maurice and Eleanor Hoerger of Pasadena, her sister Jacqueline and brother Richard. Carrie is survived by her five children, Clare Sebenius of Los Angeles, Sally Sebenius of Pasadena, Joseph Sebenius of Van Nuys, Emmons Sebenius of Hurricane, UT, and Tom Sebenius of Dallas, TX and seven grandchildren. Her children will carry with them her legacy of kindness, compassion, and fierce advocacy for others. Carrie's memory will live on in the countless lives she touchedthrough her family, her students, and the many communities that were blessed by her presence.A private funeral mass will be held at St. Bernard's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Carrie's name to Dolores Mission School.
