Champaign Co. Sheriff urges caution after 3rd fatal accident in past few weeks

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Champaign County Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene of a fatal crash on Thursday morning.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the deputies responded to the intersection of 1200 East and 2500 North in Condit Township at around 7:25 a.m.

After investigating, they found that a 33-year-old male from Elliott, Ill. was driving southbound on 1200 East when he ran a stop sign at 2500 North. The Elliott man then hit a Chevrolet pickup truck with an attached trailer.

The Elliott man later died from the injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the Chevrolet truck did not seek medical treatment, according to Champaign County Sheriff's Office.

The crash is still being investigated by Champaign County Sheriff accident reconstruction deputies. The name of the Elliott man is being withheld until their next of kin can be notified.

Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said this is the third fatal accident in the past couple of weeks. He asks motorists to be aware and undistracted while they are driving. Heuerman also said deputies will increase their enforcement of traffic violations between now and the end of the year.
