Chicago Bears fans already livid with former Seahawks playcaller Shane Waldron

All of the hype and hoopla surrounding the Chicago Bears offense under No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams and former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane Waldron has quickly fizzled.

After escaping Week 1 with a 24-17 win over the Tennessee Titans despite zero offensive touchdowns, the Bears dropped consecutive road games to the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts , scoring just 29 total points in those defeats. Caleb Williams finally broke the drought of rookie quarterbacks throwing a touchdown this season, tossing one to Rome Odunze and another one to tight end Cole Kmet.

Of course, with the additions of Williams, Waldron, Keenan Allen (currently injured), Odunze, former Seahawks tight end Gerald Everett, and D'Andre Swift, all while having DJ Moore, expectations were high that the Bears offense would look like a force in ways previous Bears offenses over the decades have not.

Well, it's only three games and while any declaration of Williams as a quarterback or Waldron as Bears OC is premature, that won't stop Bears fans from being #madonline (and probably #madoffline) at Waldron. The tipping point was a critical goal-line sequence which resulted in no points.

Facing first and goal at the Indianapolis 4-yard line with the game tied at 0-0, Waldron called not one, not two, not three, but four straight runs. The plays went for two yards, one yard, no gain, and -11 yards. It's the 4th and goal disasterclass option that made Bears fans irate.

This play was DOA, but one of the iconic images of the 2024 NFL season (and something Seahawks fans can relate to) is this still shot of almost the entire Bears OL on the ground.

And this is how Bears fans reacted on Windy City Gridiron :

And the aftermath of the overall performance on social media:

In Waldron's defense, it's three games with a rookie quarterback and a poor offensive line. Chicago ranks 30th in ESPN's pass block win rate metric , one spot above the Seahawks. Caleb Williams has thrown four interceptions and lost a fumble. When Williams is making throws like this, that's not on Waldron:

Williams still threw for 363 yards, setting a Bears franchise record. If you can fault Waldron for anything, it's continuing to give D'Andre Swift the ball when he's on an awful stretch of 37 carries for 68 yards.

There's still a lot of season left for the Bears to turn their offensive fortunes around. Unfortunately for Waldron, whether justified or not, he'll probably be the one to fall on the sword if the Bears offense doesn't live up to the grand (and probably unrealistic) expectations.
